Governance
BAAB was set up in 1990 to create a recognised mechanism for accrediting schools and colleges of acupuncture in the United Kingdom.
Our remit in recent years has understandably grown and we now work across the global healthcare arena, working with other regulators and strategic partners to uphold and align acupuncture educational and professional standards worldwide.
BAAB has six key strategic ambitions. Our primary mission is to ensure and promote excellence within acupuncture education. To do this, we foster and monitor educational and professional standards so that the public can be assured that graduates from BAAB accredited programmes are knowledgeable, reflective, competent, and safe acupuncture practitioners.

The Boards works is undertaken through the following committees:
-
The Board
-
The Executive Group
-
The Accreditation Committee
-
The Student Panel
All of our committees consist of a wide range of voices from within and outside the profession. We are proud that students and lay voices are at the heart of our decision-making. Our executive group is made up of the Chair, Vice-chair of the Board, Chair of the Accreditation committee, Treasurer and Lead Accreditation officer.
The process of to bringing BAAB’s strategic plan to life day-to-day is carried out by a staff team (consisting of BAAB employees and contractors) headed up the Lead Accreditation Officer. A full list of roles and responsibilities can be found in appendix 2.
The Board also works closely with the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) with the Lead Accreditation Officer and the Chair of the Board joining the professional body’s governing board meetings. It also works in partnership with the Council for Heads of Acupuncture Course (CHAC) with the lead accreditation officer joining their quarterly meetings.
